The grating or other covering sits flush with the adjoining surface so that water or other liquids can easily flow through the grate and down into the trough where they are carried away. Not to be confused with French drains — which are often installed to disperse rainwater throughout flood-prone backyards — trench drains are commonly found in modern shower systems, commercial bathrooms, warehouses, and flood-prone basements. A trench drain is usually either “formed” or “installed,” the former meaning that the drain trough is built on site, typically from concrete, while the latter indicates the installation of a pre-cast drain trough.
